Can I bleach my child's teeth at home?

This question reached us about that OnlySmile contact form and we decided to publish a short answer.

Due to the risk of swallowing and a lack of experience, we generally label all of our products with the note “Not suitable for children under 5 years”. The responsibility whether our products are used in children rests with the legal guardian. We think it makes sense to contact a dentist in advance and get a medical assessment before you bleach your child's teeth at home.

The deciduous teeth present in children's teeth are replaced by the permanent teeth over time. In the vast majority of cases, bleaching in children is not necessary either when they are milk teeth or after they have changed their teeth, and it is sometimes associated with unnecessary stress.

Discoloration is less common in children because a) children hardly consume luxury foods that stain them (tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco) and b) children's teeth are still young and discoloration usually occurs over several years. If there are problems with oral hygiene, it is best to discuss this with the dentist and try out various medical and / or psychological solutions.

Although our home bleaching products are safe to use with children too, we advocate starting treatment only from adolescence and as required.
