In the world of social media like Instagram, it's important to be able to present yourself well. A term was even created specifically for this: “Instagrammable”. This describes all the settings and changes that can be made to beautify a photo. So that the photo is also suitable for Instagram. We've put together some tips to help you optimize your photos for Instagram. And all without technical know-how or endless hours of practice.
The telephone has become the most used device in the western world since the mobile revolution a few years ago. As the camera quality keeps getting better, more and more people are using the phone instead of professional quality for their Instagram shots. Advanced software allows extensive setting options and subsequent adjustments. However, our goal is to provide an innovative guide that can be used without any prior technical experience.
The lighting and exposure is the basis for every good photo. As a small mnemonic, it is therefore worth remembering to rely primarily on natural light. This includes using the phone's flash to simulate natural light. Most of the time, phone flashes aren't powerful enough to adequately illuminate a subject. Instead, it is advisable to use street lamps or illuminated shop windows even in dark lighting conditions. Below is an example image of what natural light can look like.
Even when editing a photo that is too dark, care should be taken to ensure that the photos are not overexposed. Nothing can save a photo that has been overexposed.
Tip: Tap your finger on the brightest part of the screen when taking the photo. On iPhones, you can also long-tap and then swipe down or up to adjust the brightness of your photo before taking the photo. With Android phones, tapping on the brightest part of the photo is usually enough. This automatically adjusts the exposure.
You can save yourself all the little tips & tricks by taking your photo at the right time. It usually makes sense to think about the effect you want your photo to have. Should it appear rather hard and cool and have few contrasts? Then take advantage of the high midday sun and create a clear photo. Or do you want your photo to look warm and soft? Then use the early morning sun or the late evening sun for the so-called "Golden hour“. Your photo will then have a strong contrast ratio with warm colors. Below you can see a comparison of the two light conditions. On the left is the photo with the hard midday sun and few contrasts, on the right the warm photo with a lot of contrasts.
The composition is another important building block for a successful photo. Composition refers to the arrangement of individual image components. Both shapes and contours, textures, colors and other elements are suitable.
Tip: Use grid view on your phone. This divides the photo into a 3x3 grid, helping you line up the objects correctly.
The composition also includes the focus of your photo. In most photos, the target object is in the center of the photo. To make a photo more exciting and visually appealing, try not to have the target in the center. It is important that the photo is balanced by another object in the center. You can see an example below. On the left is the photo with the target object in the center, on the right is the photo with the so-called "golden section“. In addition, you can also play with the line of sight of people. If they are not looking directly into the camera, the photo automatically looks more exciting and natural.
There are many ways to draw a viewer's attention. The already mentioned view from the picture is one possible method. It evokes the train of thought: Where is the person looking? This creates curiosity. Another way is to draw the viewer's attention to the target object using the lines present in the image. Below you can see an example of what this can look like.
The lines shown here all run in the direction of the woman and thus ensure a wandering gaze. This keeps the attention focused on the object. Again, looking outside the frame gives the impression that the person has been captured in a natural movement. The resulting authenticity gives the photo charm.
People who are particularly successful on Instagram are those who are rated as attractive and successful by other people. Every culture has its own ideals that need to be fulfilled. However, one physical feature has proven attractive over the millennia in every culture imaginable. These are white and healthy teeth. White teeth enhance every smile. They also make the subject appear strong, healthy, and well-groomed. Attributes that are welcome in almost every culture.
