Lately we have received more inquiries about the cosmetic effects of baking soda. So, this article is about the teeth whitening effects of baking soda and why we would advise against using baking soda as a home remedy.
Soda is a naturally occurring salt, which is also known in technical terms as sodium hydrogen carbonate. Because of its cleaning, scouring effect, it is typically used in households as a cleaning agent.
Baking soda as salt has a natural, abrasive effect. You could almost say that baking soda works like an abrasive. So if you brush your teeth with baking soda, they will look whiter afterwards.
However, this abrasive effect is also the biggest disadvantage of baking soda.
It is this abrasive effect that can cause great damage to teeth in the long term. Why?
Due to the abrasive effect, long-term use results in lasting changes on the tooth surface, which are sharply criticized by experts.
The surface of teeth that have been brushed with baking soda over a longer period of time is attacked and therefore much more susceptible to tooth decay than healthy teeth that have not been brushed with baking soda. And tooth decay is known to be the cause of many other problems in the mouth, such as discoloration, toothache and bad breath.
Ultimately, it can be said that in the long term the yellow teeth, which you actually wanted to get rid of with baking soda, only appear more intensely with home remedies.
The abrasive effect of baking soda creates cracks in the tooth enamel. The enamel, however, is something like the top protective layer of your teeth - actually something that you want to preserve. Once the enamel has been attacked, it is much easier for harmful sugar acids and bacteria to attack your teeth and cause tooth decay.
If you want to have white teeth in the long term, we would advise against using baking soda as a home remedy. If you still want to have white teeth, but without damaging your tooth surface, it is worth taking a look OnlySmile teeth whitening set. In contrast to baking soda, they only work with UV light and a bleaching agent recommended by dentists, hydrogen peroxide, which has no long-term negative effects on your teeth or gums.
