Whitening and Sensitivity - What Should I Look For?

December 24

Bleaching und Sensitivität – worauf sollte ich achten?

We hear again and again from various sources that whitening would make teeth more sensitive to pain and temperature changes. Today we would like to address this topic and shed some light on it. In doing so, in this article we refer to information that from the German Dental Association to be provided.

How exactly whitening works

Bleaching can work in a variety of ways. Since the aim is always to whiten the teeth, various methods have become established. So with that OnlySmile tooth whitening powder and in some toothpastes, for example, small cleaning bodies are used to remove discolouring deposits on the tooth surface. This method is considered to be relatively safe, but is usually not meant when one speaks of whitening in the classic sense.

In teeth whitening, a chemical bleaching agent, usually hydrogen peroxide, is used to lighten the color of the teeth. The bleach penetrates the tooth and splits the color substances there, which in turn ensures that the teeth appear whiter. Such a gel can be found in ours, for example OnlySmile teeth whitening set. A lamp is also added here. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide is subject to strict guidelines that are intended to ensure the safety of customers when using it.

So what about the sensitivity?

When used properly, no adverse effect on the tooth is to be expected from the use of a gel. This affects both the sensitivity and the temperature feeling. A disadvantageous effect can only arise through the use of heat-emitting lamps. These dehydrate the tooth and thus damage it in the long term. This is also one of the reasons why OnlySmile does not use heat-emitting lamps, but an LED.
