A daily and thorough cleaning of the teeth can prevent many typical dental problems. However, a complete tooth brushing routine not only includes a toothbrush and toothpaste, but also dental floss and interdental brushes. Dental floss is good for the spaces between your teeth is well known and can be easily read. Today we will talk about the role of interdental brushes and their cleaning effect.
An interdental brush is a small cylindrical or conical brush. This allows the space between the teeth to be ideally cleaned and plaque, i.e. plaque consisting of harmful bacteria, to be removed. Interdental brushes come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. It is recommended to use smaller ISO sizes for tighter spaces between teeth. ISO sizes are standardized sizes for almost all interdental brushes on the market.
30-40% of the surface of each tooth consists of the interdental area, in German the space between the teeth. If this is neglected, there is an increased risk of plaque, caries and periodontitis. Harmful bacteria have the property create a protective biofilm. The more bacteria are gathered in one place, the larger this biofilm is. Under this protective layer, the bacteria can multiply at will and cause damage to the gums or tooth surface.
Research has shownthat physical destruction of the biofilm may be necessary to ensure full cleaning performance. A physical cleaning performance in the interdental area is unfortunately not guaranteed by the sole use of toothpaste and mouthwash. These same studies show that only the use of dental floss and interdental brushes effectively cleans the spaces between the teeth.
Both dental floss and interdental brushes have a comparable cleaning performance in relation to caries prevention, however, the bristles of the interdental brush fill the entire interdental space and thus clean better. The frequency of application does not differ either: ECleaning the interdental spaces once a day is enough.
Especially for those who wear braces, bridges or dentures, an interdental brush is a real benefit compared to dental floss.
