Are there any side effects of home teeth whitening?

July 15

Gibt es Nebenwirkungen beim Zahn-Bleaching für Zuhause?

A question that keeps our customers busy is that of the safety of our products. Terms such as “sensitivity to pain”, “inflammation of the gums” and “breakdown of tooth enamel” are used regularly. In this short article we want to dispel the prejudices and explain what exactly happens during bleaching at home.

Wrong Conclusions: If teeth whitening does anything at home, it has to break the teeth too

The idea that products that are effective against discoloration could also have negative health consequences is understandable. However, this assumption is wrong. According to the current scientific status (2021), the peroxides contained in the products do not penetrate the tooth enamel and, in low concentration and exposure time, cannot damage the surface. If you want to learn more about it and are looking for resources to read, please see the detailed article on teeth whitening on our blog.

Customer question: I tend to have sensitive teeth - can I still bleach my teeth at home?

We always recommend consulting an expert, in this case the dentist, for medical questions. Our articles and the recommendations they contain are in no way a substitute for medical advice.

Based on the feedback from our customers, we have made the experience that our products can also be used without hesitation on teeth that tend to be sensitive to pain. This coincides with the results of scientific studies.

Editor's recommendation for remineralization of tooth enamel

The breakdown of tooth enamel (tooth enamel erosion) is usually acid-related and is directly related to the foods we consume. Acid softens tooth enamel and can make it porous. As a result, it wears off easily. Normal oral hygiene counteracts this. In addition, a toothpaste containing amine fluoride that is used once a week can remineralize the tooth enamel, i.e. strengthen the structure. These toothpastes are available in pharmacies.
