An essential part of our teeth whitening products is hydrogen peroxide. You can find out today why we use it and what the concentration regulations are all about.
Hydrogen peroxide, also perhydrol or chemically H202 called, is a light blue liquid that is colorless in diluted form and has a wide range of uses. Due to its oxidizing character, hydrogen peroxide has powerful bleaching and disinfecting properties. That is why hydrogen peroxide has proven itself in the household as well as in professional medicine and dentistry.
It is used, for example, for cleaning PET bottles, other outer packaging or wounds; the decisive factor is the concentration. It can also be used to bleach paper, cellulose and textiles. In the cosmetic industry it is used as a bleaching agent for hair and teeth, but also to fix permanent waves.
To whiten the teeth, hydrogen peroxide is usually applied to the teeth or a splint in the form of a gel or paste and then left in for about half an hour. The hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the dyes present in the teeth and thus dissolves them, which ultimately whitens the teeth. In addition to bleaching the teeth, hydrogen peroxide also has the advantage of contributing to the sterilization of the oral cavity and preventing gum inflammation and bacterial plaque. This is exactly how our OnlySmile tooth whitening gel works.
H2O2 is nontoxic and non-flammable per se, but has a stronger effect in higher concentrations than in lower concentrations. According to Directive 2011/84 / EU, a concentration of less than 0,1% hydrogen peroxide is prescribed for cosmetic use. These quantities are considered harmless and can also be found in our tooth whitening products.
The use of higher concentrations can cause damage to the respiratory tract, inflammation of the mucous membranes and pulmonary edema. Dizziness, cramps and circulatory problems are also not uncommon. We therefore advise against purchasing your own hydrogen peroxide and recommend our safe and tested teeth whitening gel.
OnlySmile is a German provider of cosmetic teeth whitening from home and thus an inexpensive alternative to dental in-office bleaching. All of our gels and powders are developed and produced exclusively in Germany and are therefore subject to strict quality controls.
