Today we will give an overview of a previously unmentioned bleaching technique, the so-called "walking bleach" technique. This is the third most widely used method of aesthetic teeth whitening, along with the overall whitening of teeth using home bleaching or in-office bleaching.
Walking bleaching is also called internal bleaching and is necessary when a single tooth has tissue damage and is therefore severely discolored. Even after certain treatments such as a revision or a root tip resection severe discoloration may occur. This is often accompanied by a strong psychological strain on the individual patient.
Since only a single tooth is discolored, bleaching the entire set of teeth is usually not worthwhile. That is why internal bleaching focuses on the individual discolored tooth. For this, part of the root filling material is removed in order to close the now exposed canals of the tooth. This creates a cavity inside the tooth that is filled with a bleaching agent. After filling, the cavity is then closed again.
The bleaching agents in the cavity need some time to diffuse out to the outer layers of the tooth. After five to seven days you can admire the first results. If the tooth is still too dark, the same procedure is simply repeated. In most cases, about three appointments with the treating dentist are necessary for each tooth.
Once the desired result has been achieved, the bleaching reaction is neutralized and the tooth is sealed with a filling or crown, depending on the initial situation. The result usually lasts for many years. We from OnlySmile recommend a discussion with the treating dentist if there is a suspicion of a single heavily discolored tooth. They can then provide detailed information and help. Irrespective of this, comprehensive and thorough oral hygiene including toothpaste and dental floss is recommended, which prevents most problems.
