How does alcohol affect the oral flora?

April 30, 2022

Wie wirkt Alkohol auf die Mundflora?

Alcohol is a very popular and frequently used luxury food in Germany and in the rest of Europe. It comes in the form of wine, liqueurs, beer, liquor, whiskey and many other guises. Alcohol is often drunk to get into a relaxing and happy intoxication. It is well known that alcohol has numerous negative effects. Today we will talk about the special effect of alcohol on the oral flora and how it throws it off balance.

Alcohol damages the oral flora

The oral flora, like the intestinal flora, is an important part of the body's defenses (the so-called immune system). Furthermore, it plays an important role in the quality of digestion and also in the prevention of cancer, especially head and neck cancer. Of course it is disadvantageous if you damage the oral flora. Unfortunately, alcohol has exactly this effect: it throws the natural oral flora out of balance. With regular and excessive alcohol consumption, harmful bacteria (Bacteroidales, Actinomyces and Neisseria) can multiply excessively, while at the same time the development of beneficial probiotic bacteria (lactobacilli) is inhibited.

What an unhealthy oral flora can cause

If an intact and healthy oral flora is part of numerous endogenous defense processes, an oral flora damaged by alcohol is no longer able to carry out these functions. Various studies support this assumption that alcohol damages the oral flora. Alcohol can also damage vital organs such as the heart and blood vessels. In addition, there are certain gum diseases such as periodontitis or tooth decay closely related to a disturbed oral flora.

How to rebuild the oral flora

Abstinence from alcohol is, of course, only the first and most important step in restoring a healthy balance to the oral flora. If the oral flora is no longer exposed to alcohol, it regains its balance and can therefore also form healthy bacteria again. In addition, a plant-based and anti-inflammatory diet helps to restore the oral flora.

Irrespective of the diet, you can also do without strongly disinfecting mouthwash, as these can damage not only the harmful but also the probiotic bacteria. We recommend the use of natural cosmetics containing fluoride.

How does alcohol affect the oral flora?

OnlySmile stands for professional home bleaching according to the highest quality standards and the latest scientific findings. Because the well-being of our customers is our top priority, we do not recommend using our products if the oral flora is damaged. Instead, it makes sense to completely abstain from alcohol for the duration of the treatment or at least to limit consumption to such an extent that there is no longer any danger.
